What is a chiropractor?

What is a chiropractor? It seems like a simple question, but the answer may be more complex than you would expect. In this blog, we take a closer look at a chiropractor and what it means, what a chiropractor does and how chiropractic care can have a positive impact on your life.

What is a chiropractor?

A chiropractor is a specialised healthcare provider who focuses on the nervous system. The goal of chiropractic care is to balance the spine and optimise the nervous system, allowing the body to heal itself and function optimally.

Chiropractors are trained to perform specific adjustment techniques aimed at correcting spinal problems. Chiropractic believes in the power of one's own body to repair itself. By improving the health of the spine, chiropractic seeks pain relief, improved mobility and overall well-being.

The history of chiropractic care

The history of chiropractic care

Chiropractic has a rich history dating back to ancient civilisations. The ancient Greeks, Egyptians and Chinese cultures applied early forms of manual therapy to promote health and well-being. The modern era of chiropractic began in the late 19th century. Dr Daniel David Palmer is often considered the founder of chiropractic care. In 1895, Dr Palmer performed the very first chiropractic adjustment on a man who was deaf, and noted to his surprise that the man regained his hearing after the treatment. Originally, Dr Palmer thought he had found the cure for deafness with his techniques, but it later emerged that not all deaf people benefited from his treatments. What did stand out, however, was that all these people experienced improvement in very different areas: their nagging back pain disappeared, they suddenly had no headache more, they recovered faster from infectious diseases and so on. This formed the basis of the idea behind chiropractic: when the nervous system is in optimal health, the body is better able to repair itself. This led to the development of chiropractic as its own medical profession.

Chiropractic rapidly grew in popularity and spread throughout the United States and the rest of the world. In 1897, the first chiropractic school was established, and in 1913, the state of Kansas enacted the first chiropractic legislation. This recognised chiropractic as a legal profession.

Chiropractor and its significance in modern times

Modern chiropractic involves a wide range of techniques and approaches to promote a healthy spine and a properly functioning nervous system. Chiropractors have completed at least five years of training, and must undergo ongoing training to keep their practice up-to-date.

Chiropractic care is often sought for back pain, neck pain, headaches and other musculoskeletal conditions. But chiropractic care goes far beyond that! Chiropractors understand that a healthy spine and an optimally functioning nervous system contribute to overall wellbeing. It can help you sleep better, improve your sports performance, focus better on work, recover faster from the flu and much more. For instance, chiropractic can also help with pregnancy sciatica, among other things, you can read more about that in this blog.
