De oude Grieken, Egyptenaren en Chinese culturen pasten al vroege vormen van manuele therapie toe om gezondheid en welzijn te bevorderen. Het moderne tijdperk van de chiropractie begon in de late 19e eeuw. Dr. Daniel David Palmer wordt vaak beschouwd als de grondlegger van chiropractische zorg. In 1895 voerde Dr. Palmer de allereerste chiropractische aanpassing uit bij een man die doof was, en merkte tot zijn verbazing op dat de man zijn gehoor terugkreeg na de behandeling. Oorspronkelijk dacht Dr. Palmer dat hij met zijn technieken de genezing voor doofheid had gevonden, maar later bleek dat niet alle dove mensen baat hadden bij zijn behandelingen. Wat echter w\u00e9l opviel, was dat al deze mensen verbetering ondervonden op heel andere gebieden: hun <a href=\"\/wie-wij-helpen\/chiropractor-rug\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">zeurende rugpijn<\/span><\/a> verdween, ze hadden ineens geen last van <a href=\"\/wie-wij-helpen\/chiropractor-hoofdpijn\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hoofdpijn<\/span><\/a> meer, ze herstelden sneller van infectieziekten en ga zo maar door. Dit vormde de basis van het idee achter chiropractie: als het zenuwstelsel in optimale gezondheid verkeerd, is het lichaam beter in staat om zichzelf te herstellen. Dit leidde tot de ontwikkeling van chiropractie als een eigen medisch beroep.<\/p><p>Chiropractie groeide snel in populariteit en verspreidde zich over de Verenigde Staten en de rest van de wereld. In 1897 werd de eerste chiropractische school opgericht, en in 1913 richtte de staat Kansas de eerste chiropractische wetgeving in.
