Nerve pain: causes and symptoms

Nerve pain, also known as neuropathic pain or neuralgia, is a challenging condition that often has a significant impact on a person's quality of life. One of the most common forms of nerve pain is pain radiating along the nerves of the leg, a condition also known as sciatica. At The Family Chiropractor, we understand the complexity of nerve-related pain and strive to provide our patients with the right guidance and care to improve their well-being. In this blog, we talk more about the causes and symptoms of nerve pain, and how chiropractic care can help with these symptoms.

Nerve pain: causes and symptoms

What is nerve pain?

Nerve pain refers to pain that results from damage, irritation or dysfunction of a nerve. It can manifest as various sensations and pain symptoms, such as stinging, burning or tingling. This pain can spread along the nerve and affect different parts of the body. Nerve pain can vary in intensity, from mild discomfort to severe, hindering pain that affects daily functioning.

What are the causes of nerve pain?

There are several causes of nerve pain. Nerve pain can be caused by injury, compression and entrapment of the nerve, inflammation, infection or conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, among others. Some common causes of nerve pain are further explained below.

  • Damage to nerves: Injury, trauma, surgery or pressure on nerves can lead to nerve damage, resulting in nerve pain.

  • Compression of nerves: When nerves are compressed by surrounding structures, this can cause nerve pain. This is the case, for example, with a herniated disc, protrusion of intervertebral discs or abnormal bone growth

  • Ignition: Inflammation due to conditions such as arthritis, infections or autoimmune diseases can put pressure on nerves and cause pain.

  • Nerve diseases: Conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis (MS), neuropathies and other nerve-related disorders can cause nerve pain due to nerve damage.

  • Radiation pain: This is pain radiating from another area of the body. For example, consider sciatica (nerve pain in the leg), where pain radiates from the lower back along the leg.

  • Chemotherapy: Some chemotherapy drugs can cause peripheral neuropathy, leading to nerve pain.

Sciatica: nerve pain in the leg

Sciatica, a common form of nerve pain, is characterised by pain radiating from the lower back to the leg. This condition can have several causes, such as a pinched nerve, injury to the spine or pressure on the nerve roots. Sciatica often presents with symptoms such as sharp pain shooting down the back of the leg, a burning sensation, numbness or tingling. It can be difficult to sit, stand or even walk comfortably, which can greatly affect daily activities.

Chiropractic care for nerve pain

Chiropractic focuses on the spine and nervous system. By balancing the spine and 'soothing' the nervous system, so to speak, chiropractic can help relieve nerve pain. Chiropractors use so-called 'chiropractic adjustements' to bring the nervous system to an optimal state and restore the proper movement and function of the spine. As the alignment of the spine improves, chiropractic adjustments can help reduce pressure on the nerves. This allows better communication between the nervous system and the rest of the body. Chiropractors apply different techniques depending on the specific cause of the nerve pain. The aim here is to support the body's natural healing processes and promote overall health by balancing the spine. Depending on the cause of the nerve pain and your specific situation, together we can assess whether chiropractic care is the best solution for you. Every person and every situation is unique, and so it would be strange to say that chiropractic is always the best option. In some cases, chiropractic can better serve as a complement to other, primary treatment methods. At The Family Chiropractor, we always look at your individual situation. If we think you would be better off with another specialist, we will always let you know and may refer you to other specialists with whom we have had good experiences.
