Chiropractor dangerous?

Chiropractic care is becoming increasingly popular worldwide as a treatment method for various pain conditions and health problems. In the Netherlands, we have seen a real explosion in demand for chiropractic care over the past five years. But while more and more people are finding their way to the chiropractor, it is also not uncommon to occasionally hear people wondering whether chiropractic care can be dangerous. In this blog, we take a closer look at this issue and look at the facts to answer the question, "is a chiropractor dangerous?"

The basics of chiropractic care

First, let's start with a brief explanation of what chiropractic care entails. A chiropractor is a specialised healthcare provider who focuses on the nervous system. The goal of chiropractic care is to balance the spine and optimise the nervous system, allowing the body to heal itself and function optimally. Chiropractors are trained to perform specific adjustment techniques aimed at correcting spinal problems. By improving the health of the spine, chiropractic seeks pain relief, improved mobility and overall well-being.

Is a chiropractor dangerous?

In general, it can be said that chiropractic care is very safe if performed by a qualified and skilled chiropractor. An important thing to look out for is whether your chiropractor is a registered chiropractor. This means that the chiropractor is affiliated to the SNRC (Foundation the National Register of Chiropractors), and must therefore meet very strict quality requirements. Chiropractors affiliated with the SNRC have undergone training of at least five years, and must undergo continuous training to keep their skills up-to-date. In addition, most chiropractors have also completed specialisation courses, meaning the average chiropractor has studied for at least seven years before going into independent practice. During training, chiropractors undergo extensive training to be able to perform safe and effective treatments. They understand the anatomy of the human body like no other, and are aware of the potential risks posed by certain health conditions.

Rare risks and side effects

Although chiropractic care is generally very safe, as with any form of healthcare, there are some rare risks and side effects you should be aware of. It is always a good idea to inform yourself about these risks before your first treatment.

Side effects: Some people experience temporary stiffness or mild pain after the first treatment(s). This is usually transient. It is also not unusual for your symptoms to worsen temporarily after your first appointment before they subside. You may also feel a little dizzy, nauseous or tired. During your first appointment, the chiropractor will always go over with you what to expect after your appointment. Do you doubt whether the symptoms you experience after your appointment are normal? Then don't feel embarrassed to contact your chiropractor. Your chiropractor can reassure you or give advice on how to alleviate your side effects.

Rare risks: Although extremely rare, it is possible that complications can occur after chiropractic adjustments. One possible risk is injury to the vertebral artery. This is the artery that controls the blood supply to the brain. Injury to the vertebral artery can have serious consequences, such as stroke. Another very rare risk is the risk of neurological complications. It is important to note that these risks are extremely rare. A qualified and experienced chiropractor will take the necessary precautions and apply safe techniques to minimise risks. It is always wise to share your medical history and discuss any concerns before seeking chiropractic care. Collaboration with other healthcare providers can also help ensure safe and effective treatment.

The history of chiropractic care

Chiropractor dangerous? No way! But here's what you can watch out for yourself:

Choose a qualified chiropractor: Make sure you choose a registered chiropractor. In the Netherlands, this is a chiropractor affiliated to the SNRC.

Discuss your medical history: Inform your chiropractor of any existing conditions or health problems. Do not withhold information, even if it is a complaint you might be ashamed of or if you are unsure whether the information is relevant. Better to have too much information than too little!

Follow the recommendations: Follow your chiropractor's instructions, and contact them if you are in doubt about your side effects.

Conclusion: is a chiropractor dangerous?

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective approach to healthcare. However, as with any medical treatment, there are rare risks and side effects. It is important to keep yourself well-informed, inform the chiropractor of your medical history and take your own health seriously.

If you are considering starting chiropractic care, do not hesitate to ask your questions to a chiropractor near you. At our practice, for example, we offer the possibility of a free consultation without obligation of 15 minutes, during which you can ask all your questions and get to know the chiropractor in advance. That way, you can make an informed decision about what is best for your health and well-being. Chiropractic care can be a valuable addition to your overall care, if applied correctly.
